The Potential of Architecture

One can walk in and out of a space without really noticing it, even if one isn't familiar with it. This happens cause the space is a very typical kind of design that the subconscious had already analyzed in one glance and then the mind carries on with its other occupancies.

A pre-occupied mind is not a healthy sign of living, where one is not present in the present. Architecture can help bring the mind to the present, snap it out of its reverie.
Instead of being served on a platter, if circulation requires a slight amount of thinking, the portion of the brain that analyzes spatial context gets activated and the rest of the space get explored and experienced in the bargain.

Most of the structures that we see around are all designed with the notion of the front and side facades being attractive. A plan is developed keeping in mind a certain typical circulation pattern and then elevated to form a 3 dimensional building from which one can't tell what lies where within. Moreover, it lacks any quality of form or language and adds to the urban fabric as just another cuboid. And then it is advertised as an iconic structure of the city, a unique Concept!

‘Concept’ has a very deep meaning, an undertone of essence that is lost in all the “concepts” that one visualizes today. Limited to the realms of facade and circulation, “concept” has floated up to an extremely superficial layer, something that is unlikely to be noticed. A glass facade is considered a ‘concept’ whereas the Concept behind a glass facade was at one point in time: truthfulness and honesty, exposure and nakedness, the blend of the inside and the outside, a visual connection, a link that passes through the space and continues beyond.

When looking at an image that contains an open space and a structure, the eye tends to draw in the information of the open space first. That is a consequence of the human psyche that knows that being outside frees the mind and relaxes the body and hence any sort of green element in an image makes it look attractive to the mind. This is the very point that the developers have got onto and hence promote their properties using 3D images showing lots of greenscapes and open spaces with happy faces. It brings in the feeling of an ideal life to the viewer. But in reality an ideal life cannot be provided. It is defined, by the person living it.

All our lives are centered around spaces and architecture plays a huge role at the micro level as well as macro level; affecting individuals and cities. Eventually a drastic change in the standard styles of design can bring about mega changes in the thinking and mentality of the era.
